Punjabi Rapper Honey Singh Asked to Appear in Court

On Thursday, the high courts of Punjab and Haryana ordered Punjabi rap singer Honey Singh to present personally before the court on May 14 to respond to the allegations leveled against him for singing a song "Main Hoon Balatk@ri".

Yo Yo Honey Singh Accused of Singing Vulgar Songs

While expressing disappointment on the vulgar songs being sung by Punjabi rapper (singer) Honey Singh (who is also known as Yo Yo Honey Singh), the Punjab and Haryana high court has summoned him to the court personally on May 14 for explanation on the same. The division bench comprising acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and justice Rakesh Kumar Jain passed these orders. After hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by NGO HELP (Human Empowerment League of Punjab) of Nawanshar (Punjab), HC have passed these orders. During the time of resumed hearing of the case, the lyrics of the song 'main hoon balatk@ari'  (I am a r@pist) sung by him shocked the bench very much. The bench asked HC Arora the advocate of petitioner as to what kind of singer he was who was singing such 'shameful songs' having no respect to the women. Arora informed the court that the singer is a resident of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab. The petitioner NGO had asked for some directions to be set up that can lead to curbing the menace of obscene/vulgar/lewd songs such as setting up a censor board or framing some other type of policy. The petitioner had used a news report for reference published in a English today for bringing home the fact as to how vulgar/ obscene songs are being recorded and played by certain Punjabi singers. A particular reference was made to a song "Main Hoon B@latk@ri" sung by Honey Singh. The petitioner stated that all limits of decency are being crossed and violated by such songs. Provisions of section 294 of Indian Penal code (IPC) were referred by the petitioner, according to which singing of lewd/ obscene songs at public places is an offence. It was further stated that women have the right to protect their dignity, as a facet of their fundamental right of "right to life", and thee fundamental right to dignity of a human being cannot be violated under the garb of "right to freedom of speech". According to the petitioner said that there is a long list of such obscene songs being recorded and played these days, but the Punjab government has not taken any steps to curb this growing menace. Earlier on March 1, the Punjab government had informed the High Court that they are in the process of finalizing a policy to ban vulgar, misogynist and s#xist songs in the state. However, the Govt. of Punjab had earlier informed the high court on March 1 that it would soon finalise the policy regarding recording/playing of vulgar and indecent songs. According to the petitioner the constitution of a censor board should be setup to check such menace of recording and playing of lewd songs or framing of an effective policy. The petitioner NGO HELP has also told the court regarding some more Punjabi Singers who had been recording vulgar/lewd songs and "jumping all limits of decency", with citing some news reports. The petition has named singers such as

• Honey Singh,
• Diljit Dosanjh,
• Gippy Grewal,
• Amar Chamkila,
• Ashok Masti and
• Geeta Zaildar,

"whose music albums/songs should be scrutinised and appropriate action taken against them as per law." The case would now be come up for hearing on May 14.
