RIM Renamed as BlackBerry, Launched BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry Z10 & Q10

BlackBerry 10

After years of Apple and Google grabbing its smartphone market share, BlackBerry yesterday launched a version of its phones that it hopes will bring it back. At an event in New York City, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins, not only announced the much-delayed BlackBerry 10, the new phone software the company has been working on for the past two years, but that RIM would now officially be called BlackBerry. Also, the company made some huge announcements regarding its future. On Monday, Feb. 4 it will be changing its stock ticker symbol to BBRY. Curious what all the hype is about? Here's a quick look back at the event, what the company announced, and what we can expect in the future.

Curious what all the hype is about? Here’s a quick look back at the event, what the company announced, and what we can expect in the future.

“We have been on a journey of transformation, to transform our business and our brand, but also one that will transform mobile communications to true mobile computing,” Heins said on stage. “Saying we have reinvented this company is simply not enough. Today is a new day in the history of BlackBerry.”

Don’t Call Us RIM

RIM officially changed its name to BlackBerry. To go along with the new name the company will update its ticker symbol from RIMM to BBRY, and it introduced a new tagline: “One brand, one promise.” The company will be showcasing the new name in its first Super Bowl ad ever this coming weekend.

BlackBerry 10′s New Features
BlackBerry 10 is a completely new version of the BlackBerry software. It doesn’t share a line of code with the previous version called BlackBerry 7 and was built completely for the touchscreen. The OS is quite similar to that of the iPhone or Android, as it is built around pages of apps but BlackBerry said the other platforms are now outdated and that the BlackBerry 10 will provide “differentiating” features.

“It’s a change in smartphone experience — the dominant paradigm, introduced six years ago, was great and revolutionary at the time,” BlackBerry’s Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben told ABC News in an interview. “But six years is a long time for a technology cycle, with a new user experience with a clear focus we have the opportunity to take market share back.”

BlackBerry Z10 phone doesn’t have a physical keyboard, but it has a software keyboard that BlackBerry has put a lot of time and effort into crafting. The software keyboard predicts words as you are typing, and you can swipe words into the keyboard. There is also the Hub, which brings in all your messages — email, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn — into a universal inbox. You can swipe up and left to get to the Hub from any screen. In fact, the entire operating system is built around swiping; there’s no back button or physical home button.

BlackBerry also discussed a feature called BlackBerry Balance, which allows you to create different areas of the phone for work and your personal life. Additionally, it’s new BlackBerry Messenger will have voice and video chatting functionality, allowing users a way around using their minutes.

The camera app is one place where BB10 is going to stand out against the competition. A Time Shift feature allows you to scroll back in time on a particular part of a photo, adjusting it slightly. For instance, if a friend is blinking in a group shot, you can scroll back in time on just that friend’s face in the shot and change their expression to the moment before their eyes closed. A new feature called Story Maker lets you stitch together photos, videos and tunes together into a “story” you can share with friends.

There Are Two Devices – Z10 & Q10

There are currently two smartphones running BlackBerry 10: The Z10 and Q10. The Z10 is an all-touch handset with a similar look to the iPhone 5. BlackBerry 10 will first launch on the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone. The phone has a 4.2-inch screen, a dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel camera on the front for video chatting.

While the Q10 has a traditional BlackBerry look with a physical keyboard.

All four major carriers in the United States have committed to carrying one or both of the handsets, however, no carrier has specified when. At the BlackBerry 10 launch event, Heins said he expected the Z10 to be available in March of this year in the U.S. and the Q10 to be available in April, as long as carrier testing goes according to plan.

Verizon announced pricing for the Z10 on its network: $199 with a new two-year contract. No other carrier announced pricing of any kind.

The BlackBerry Z10 will be available in Canada on Feb. 5 and in the U.K. early next month. In the U.S. it will be available in March. AT&T and Verizon have said they will carry one of the first phones with BlackBerry 10. According to RIM, the Z10 will be sold for a suggested retail price of $199 with a two-year contract; an unlocked version will be sold for $599.

 BlackBerry World and Apps

Heins spent much of the presentation focusing on the big question people have had for the new software: How will it have the apps that have become so popular on the iPhone and Android phones?

“We will be the platform launching with the highest number of apps on day one,” Boulben said. The company has worked with software developers to stock its BlackBerry World store, which includes apps and music and movies, to have 70,000 apps out of the gate. RIM announced that popular apps like Facebook, Skype, Kindle, Twitter, Angry Birds, Evernote, Rdio, ESPN Scorecenter, Flixter and Cut the Rope will be in the store for consumers.

In addition to the apps available in the store today, BlackBerry also announced that Skype has committed to creating an application for the platform.

Alicia Keys?

At the end of the press conference, CEO Thorsten Heins announced that the company has appointed singer/songwriter Alicia Keys as its new Global Creative Director. Keys, who has previously spoken the praises of the iPhone, said she was happy to be back in an “exclusive relationship” with BlackBerry.

Keys says she is going to be working directly with developers and carriers on the platform, as well as with other artists.

Yahoo Expects Revenue Growth In 2013

Yahoo Inc looks quiet determined in increase in revenue for the current year as it revamps its family of websites.

But Chief Executive Marissa Mayer warned it would be a long journey to revive the Internet company’s fortunes.

Yahoo Expects Revenue Growth In 2013 | Eminentyouth

Yahoo’s first financial outlook since Mayer became CEO in July, the company outlined a plan to trigger a “chain reaction of growth” by overhauling a dozen of its online services to increase the amount of time users spent on its websites.

It also point out to strength in its search engine & adsense business and progress made in improving its internal operations.

Yahoo’s shares were 3 % up in after hours trade after the revenue projection was disclosed during an analysts conference call, shedding some ground after earlier rising as much as 4.5 %.

But weakness is Yahoo’s ad business, which accounts for hardly 40 % of the company’s total revenue.

“While the road to growth is certain, it will not be immediate,” said Mayer, a former Google Inc executive and Yahoo’s third full-time CEO since September 2011.

Yahoo said that revenue, excluding fees it pays to partner websites, will range around $4.5-$4.6 billion in 2013, implying an annual growth rate of 0.7 % to 3 %.

Finance Chief Ken Goldman also warned investors to expect “an investment phase” in the first half of the year, which he said would impact profit margins.

“What was clear from the call is that this is a long-term turnaround story,” said Macquarie Research analyst Ben Schachter.

“We shouldn’t expect anything to just snap back and correct itself.” During the fourth quarter, last year, Yahoo’s net revenue increased 4 % to $1.22 billion, as search advertising sales sets a 10 % decline in the number of display ads sold on Yahoo’s core properties.

Yahoo Expects Revenue Growth In 2013 | Eminentyouth.com

Mayer added that the decline was the result of less activity by visitors to its popular websites, such as its Web email service, and to a lesser extent due to users accessing the Web on smartphones, where Yahoo’s ad business is not as strong as to its main web.

“Efforts to revamp its mobile properties, begun last year with a redesign of the photo-sharing service Flickr, remain on track,” said Mayer, “Yahoo now has 200 million monthly mobile users,” he added.

“From a monetization perspective this is still a very nascent source of revenue for us. With any platform shift, revenue always followed users and mobile will be no different,” he said.

Mayer signed as a CEO of the company after a horror period at Yahoo in which former CEO Scott Thompson resigned after less than 6 months on the job over a controversy about his academic credentials and in which Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board and cut his ties with the company.

Yahoo’s stock has risen roughly 30 % since Mayer took the work in his hands, reaching its highest levels since 2008.

“Part of the stock’s rise has been driven by significant stock buybacks, using proceeds from a $7.6 billion deal to sell half of its 40 % stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Group,” said Sameet Sinha, an analyst with B. Riley Caris.

Yahoo said it repurchased $1.5 billion worth of shares during the fourth quarter. The company’s fourth-quarter net income was $272.3 million, or 23 cents per share, versus $295.6 million, or 24 cents per share in the year-ago period.

Excluding certain items, Yahoo said it had earnings per share of 32 cents, versus the average analyst expectation of 28 cents according to Thomson.

Yahoo’s shares were up by 59 cents at $20.90 in after-hours trading on Monday.

36 Best Ways to Reduce Bounce Rate

As i already have talked about BOUNCE RATE & PAGEVIEWS, now i am sharing the ways to reduce bounce rate and increase pageviews in this post. To know more about Bounce Rate and Pageviews click here.

In short, Bounce Rate is the percentage of web site visitors who arrive at an entry page on your web site, then leave without visiting any other pages or leave without going any deeper into the site.

Below are some ways to reduce bounce rate of your site.

decrease bounce rate and increase pageviews | emientyouth

Bounce Rate

Ways to Reduce Bounce Rate

  1. Good Web Layout & Design : You should be careful while choosing between magazine and normal layout theme. Many recommend Thesis theme for better bounce rate. The look of your site’s design can force your visitors to stay. Your website should be as simple as possible.
  2. Relevant Content : If your blog is about Gadgets, then publish articles related to Gadgets category alone. Don’t write about Fruits and Vegetables. Because visitors will expect more from Gadgets category.
  3. Clear and Proper Navigation : Let the visitors of your site know where they are. Every blog should have breadcrumb. Have a proper archives section. Place the navigation menu near the top of the page. Use simple and clear words for navigation options.
  4. Good and Original Content : Always publish original content. Never publish duplicate content which will affect your blog in several ways. Your blog’s content should be worth reading.
  5. Contrast Is Key : No one will stay on a site they can’t read. Of all of the ways to increase accessibility of a site, perhaps the biggest and easiest is to simply use good contrast. Not only does this make the site more accessible to visitors who may have difficulty seeing, but also has the overall effect of making important content easier to find and focus on. Contrast can be a powerful tool for directing the reader’s attention to where you want it to go. More and more people are accessing the web via mobile devices, which means your site will be viewed on a variety of screen resolutions — in any number of lighting conditions — so your site needs to be as readable as possible in these situations.
  6. Avoid Distractions : Avoid pop-ups, external toolbars and anything similar to that which causes distractions to the visitors. You can also avoid using Text In Link ads.
  7. Improve loading speed : Don’t make your visitors to wait. Your blog’s page views will automatically increase if the pages load faster and quicker.
  8. Update Your Content : If you have content that is dated, consider adding some new information. Check your analytics to see which pages have the highest bounce rate and revisit the page copy for these pages.
  9. Add Relevant Images : Make sure you add relevant and related images to the articles. Provide good resolution and quality images.
  10. Avoid External Links : External links on your blog’s main page can make the bounce rate very high. So you can avoid external links on the first page that visitors see when they land on your site. Try to reduce the number of outgoing links.
  11. Comparing : Compare the page which gets lower bounce rate with the page that gets higher. Ask your friends and other fellow bloggers the difference between them. This one can help a lot.
  12. Analyze Bounce Rate : I recommend Google Analytics for analyzing your site’s bounce rate. Check site’s bounce rate regularly and see if there is any change. Study the reports. See which page gets the lowest bounce rate and highest bounce rate.
  13. Ample Content : Try to have minimum 300-400 words of content on your site’s pages. Try to provide sufficient content to your site visitors. Let it be in the form of images, text or videos.
  14. Targeted Keywords : Your Keywords should be specifically targeted for the content on your site. Bounce rates are also influenced by wrongly optimized keywords. Consider a post title like this, “Top 15 Twitter Tools for Twitter Freaks“. And you optimize this post title with wrong keywords like “Twitter Hacks” or “Twitter’s New Service”. This makes the users annoy and they won’t visit that page/site later.
  15. Minimize Pages : Try to minimize the number of pages you have on your website. Keep it simple and clear, so that your visitors will not get confused.
  16. Optimize Keywords : Always use the keywords within your articles. For example, I have a post titled “Killer Ways to Build Backlinks | The Ultimate Guide“, and then I will use the keywords like “Ways to Build Backlinks”, “Make Backlinks” and so on. This will indeed increase the value of the keywords on the search engines.
  17. Good and Effective Headlines : Each page’s title should match the content within that page. Don’t try to use misleading page titles. You can refer Google’s “ Five Tips for Writing Effective Web Headlines “.
  18. Offer subscriptions : You can offer RSS, feeds and E-mail newsletters by which readers can easily subscribe and get daily updates. This will help in enhancing your site’s bounce rate because those readers will come back to read more.
  19. Good Quality Links : Try to acquire as many good links as possible that points to your blog or blog’s page. Those links should have correct anchor text. You can hook other webmasters to link to your pages by placing genuine content in your pages. Avoid link exchange since there is a possibility of losing PageRank on both sides.
  20. Remove Autoplay Videos : This is my opinion. I’ll close the site immediately if it starts singing. Remove the video altogether, or at least have it paused.
  21. Popular Posts : You can use Popular Posts plugin and list the top and popular articles in your site’s sidebar.
  22. Related Posts : Providing related links to other content on your site can go a long way in keeping visitors engaged, but you’ll have the best results the more relevant the content is. But you don’t want to go overboard; users can easily be overwhelmed by too much information. Less is often more. There are many ways to show related posts on your blog. You can try Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP) .
  23. Internal Linking : By internal linking your readers can know about other content of your site without having to search for it. Interlink only if it is related to the article and you can also do this to your old articles. Try to link between your old articles as reference.
  24. Place Search Box : You can provide your visitors with the option to search on your blog at the top. If they cannot find anything interesting on the landing page, they can use search option to navigate into the site.
  25. Page SEO : Provide proper URL , title and keyword optimization. For WordPress users, I recommend Yoast SEO plugin.
  26. Interactive Articles : Your article should be in a reader friendly manner.
  27. Free Downloads : You can easily attract visitors if you provide free downloads like free themes, free wallpapers and so on. You can make them click on that link easily.
  28. Use Post Excerpts : If your article is too long you can use post excerpts. If there is too much content on the main page visitors will get tired by scrolling and they’ll decide to leave.
  29. Eliminate Bad Traffic : If getting/buying traffic from other sites is not profitable to you, then you need to eliminate all those sources. Check which PPC keywords are bouncing and shut those keywords.
  30. Upper Left to Lower Right : Keep the upper left of your site pretty, pretty nice and attractive. Because visitors will first see that only and that decides whether they need to stay or not.
  31. Optimize 404 Pages : Many blogs have ugly 404 error page. That makes the bounce rate to bounce more. Your visitors will leave your site and look elsewhere for the information they were looking for. So optimize the error page. Provide some solutions and suggestions there. You can use 404 redirection plugin.
  32. Optimize The Sidebar : Remove all those useless and time consuming widgets from your site’s sidebar and try to include widgets such as “Popular Posts”, “Recent Articles” & “tag cloud” in the sidebar.
  33. Surveys and Polls : This is the best way to interact with your readers and visitors. Ask them some questions or suggestions. You can check the results and you can predict whether they will stick around or not.
  34. Don’t Get Tricky : There are lot of other tricks you can use to lower your bounce rate, like embedding polls, contests, and other attention-grabbing clickable content. However, if the sole purpose of these tactics is just to lower your bounce rate, you may lose sight of what a real consumer is looking for. The temptation to use keyword and SEO-heavy headlines is strong, but if they misrepresent the content of an article or post, you may lose out on repeat visitors, even if your bounce rates are reduced temporarily. Although it is important to make a good first impression, a site’s mission to either sell, entertain or inform should always be primary.
  35. Be Mindful of Ad Placement : No one likes looking at advertisements, but the reality is that most of the sites could not survive without them. Advertisements are a necessary evil that allows content providers to make money but too many advertisements can be a big turn-off to your readers. Advertising that’s too close to your site navigation can cause accidental clicks, which force visitors to leave your page — unintentionally, and in frustration. Too many ads above the fold means your readers have more to wade through before getting to the heart of your site. Also, ads that interrupt your content or present themselves as if they were a part of your website can cause confusion and frustration. Keep advertising prominently placed but far enough out of the way that visitors can still use your site without having to navigate around a sea of ads.
  36. Check Browser Performance : The developer who built your site might have worked exclusively in Firefox and might failed to check its performance in Internet Explorer, Safari, and Google chrome. Unfortunately, parts of your site that load fine in one type of browser struggle in others. Your analytics tool can break down bounce by browser type to see if this is the culprit.

Bounce Rate Is Low But Not Seeing Any Results

There can be a lot of potential reason for this issue but one thing that is related to bounce rate that you can check is exit percentage. Google defines exit percentage rate as this: “The percentage of site exits that occurred from a page or set of pages”. If you are seeing a page that your visitors land on often in the flow of your site that has a high exit percentage look deeper into that page. You could be wasting the effort you have put into lowering your bounce rate if the other pages on your site are bad.

Backlinks

If You Have a Lot of Time or Money, Try these Link Building Techniques

  1. Build your own social authority tool (as Klout) – Social influence is going to be one of the hottest new trends in digital marketing over the next few years, so by launching your own tool could result in a tremendous number of backlinks.
  2. Build your own directory – Directories are painless to create, and may provide a revenue stream in addition to the opportunity to build backlinks.
  3. Hire an industry authority whose connections you can leverage – If you aren’t making much headway on your own, hire a more experienced authority in your industry to leverage existing connections and build links to your site.
  4. Buy advertising appropriately – As long as they don’t pass PageRank inappropriately, the paid links you acquire through advertising campaigns may still offer you the opportunity to increase traffic and revenue.
  5. Build your own authority – When you’re regarded as an authority figure, people tend to naturally link back to you more often.  It isn’t easy to do, but can be a lucrative pursuit over time.
  6. Create a directory for your blog and make it important to reciprocate links with you by giving those who link to you higher placement and giving them free featuring on your homepage.
  7. Form a new online community – Running your own social network, forum or other online community takes time, but can be a great way to build backlinks if you’re successful.
  8. Create a local listing website – You don’t have to be the next Yelp, but creating a small, targeted listing site for local businesses should help you to pick up additional backlinks.
  9. Give presentations at industry conferences – Not only will presenting at conferences boost your perceived authority, it’ll earn you a backlink from the conference website as well.
  10. Hire a public relations firm – It isn’t inexpensive, but using a PR firm to get your name out there will result in many more backlinks than you may be able to achieve on your own.
  11. Hire an SEO agency – If you don’t have time to do your own link building, pay someone else to do it. SEO agencies often have tools and systems in place that enables them to build backlinks for clients much more efficiently and cost-effectively than webmasters working on their own.
  12. Get listed in top paid Directories like the Yahoo Directory and the BOTW directory.

Would Mental Illness Be Revealed By Facebook?

Facebook profiles may reveal mental illness

A recent study has found that a person’s profile on Facebook may reveal signs of mental illness that might not necessarily emerge in a session with a psychiatrist.

According to study researcher Elizabeth Martin, a psychology doctoral student at the University of Missouri, social media activity when used as a tool in psychological diagnosis can remove some of the problems associated with patients.

“For example, questionnaires often depend on a person’s memory, which may or may not be accurate. By asking patients to share their Facebook activity, we were able to see how they expressed themselves naturally,” said study researcher Elizabeth Martin.

“Even the parts of their Facebook activities that they chose to conceal exposed information about their psychological state,” said Martin.

Martin’s team researched on more than 200 college students and had them fill out questionnaires to evaluate their levels of extroversion, paranoia, enjoyment of social interactions, and endorsement of strange beliefs.

The students were asked to log on to their facebook profiles. They were told they would have the option to black-out parts of their profile before some of it was printed out for the researchers to examine.

By asking patients to share their Facebook activity, the researchers were able to see how they expressed themselves naturally.

Even the parts of their Facebook activities that they chose to conceal exposed information about their psychological state, Martin explained.

Participants who showed higher levels of social anhedonia -a condition characterized by lack of pleasure from social interactions- genrally carrying fewer Facebook friends, shared fewer photos, and communicated less frequently on the site, the researchers found.

These participants also showed schizotypy symptoms, known as perceptual aberrations, which are anomalous experiences of one’s senses, and magical ideation, which is the belief that events with no physical cause-and-effect are somehow causally connected.

Hiding Facebook activity also was considered a sign of higher levels of paranoia.

However, it should be noted that participants higher on paranoia did not differ from participants lower in paranoia in terms of the amount of personal information shared, the researchers wrote in their study detailed Dec. 30, 2012, in the journal Psychiatry Research.

The outcome shows that this group is more interested in showing  their problems socially among friends then to a Psychiatrist.

The researchers said information culled from social networking sites potentially could be used to inform diagnostic materials or intervention strategies for people with mental health issues.

“Social media profiles could eventually be used as tools for psychologists and therapists,” according to Martin.

“Therapists could possibly use social media activity to create a more complete clinical picture of a patient,” Martin added to his statement.
