WWE WrestleMania 29 is in the books with John Cena beating The Rock to win the WWE Championship and former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar falling to Triple H. We'll got full results, analysis and GIFs.
WWE WrestleMania 29 is in the books and what a show it was. In front of the second largest crowd in WWE history at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., fans saw John Cena regain the WWE Championship by pinning The Rock, and also saw Triple H save his career by beating former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.
The Undertaker also remained undefeated at WrestleMania, running his record to 21-0 by pinning CM Punk with the Tombstone in the best match on the show.
Let's go over the results and some opinion on the matches:
The Shield defeated The Big Show, Randy Orton & Sheamus
The match started off with The Shield displaying plenty of offense and playing up their pack-of-dogs mentality. Big Show rocked Dean Ambrose with a spear for the save when they had Sheamus set for the triple power bombs. Some moments later, Sheamus crawled for a tag from Big Show, but Orton stole it and entered the ring instead. Apparently, he was set for the win after he impressively hit Seth Rollins with a mid-air RKO off the top rope, but Roman Reigns quickly appeared to land a ring-rattling spear. Ambrose then got the pin on Orton. Afterwards, Show wasn't exactly enthused, and he delivered a KO punch to both Sheamus and Orton.Opinion: The Shield is awesome. The three, Shield guys are those who really keeps your eye out for, especially Dean Ambrose, who has all the tools by which he can be one of the best in the company in the near future. Some good comedy spots appeared early in this one but caught fire at the end.
Mark Henry defeated Ryback
Henry controlled the majority of the match, Ryback quickly turned things around when he hit the Meathook Clothesline. He lifted up Henry for the Shell Shocked, The World's Strongest Man grabbed the rope and fell on Ryback. He then rolled over the "knocked-out" Ryback for the three count. While the referees was tending to Ryback, Henry came back for more. It turned out to be a huge mistake. Ryback suddenly woke up and hit Henry with a spinebuster and landed a big Shell Shocked to bring the interesting battle to an end.Opinion: Well, didn't really see this one coming, and it seemed especially pointless after Ryback laid Henry out after the match. But Henry is awesome and it was nice to see him get a big win on the big stage.
Team Hell No defeated Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship
This match was fairly short (just over seven minutes), though a lot of really impressive spots appeared from every wrestler, most notably Langston and Daniel Bryan, who got a little bit of WrestleMania redemption. In the end, A.J. Lee distracted the referee then Ziggler tried to attack Kane with his briefcase, but he missed and was met with a chokeslam instead. Bryan then tagged in and connected with the headbutt from the top rope for the win.Opinion: This was rushed, but it was all action, so it was pretty darn good. Daniel Bryan is great, so is Ziggler, and Langston is going to be huge, as well. Was a little surprised to see the champs retain here, but this was one of the most over matches on the show.
Fandango defeated Chris Jericho
This match featured some excellent moments. Fandango's big leg drop off the top rope, Jericho being classic Jericho—but this will be remembered for the sloppy finish. After Fandango missed an attempt for a second leg drop, Jericho went for the Lionsault, but overshot it. He then went for the Walls of Jericho, but sold a knee injury and Fandango was able to roll up the former World champ for the win. Overall, it spoiled what was looking like a thrilling match, but Fandango got the push many were expecting.Opinion: Well, the finish was a little clunky, but Fandango did well in his first big match and Chris Jericho continues to show why he is one of the best in the world. If he does go back to music for a while, here's hoping he comes back sooner or later. He really adds a lot to the company.
Alberto Del Rio defeated Jack Swagger to retain the World Heavyweight Championship
This certainly wasn't the most up-tempo match you will ever see but it is difficult to deny the talented wrestling that took place inside the ring. Del Rio and Swagger both showcased power, athleticism and a slew of good fashioned, technically strong moves. Unfortunately, most will instead remember the disappointing end. Del Rio retained when he forced Swagger to tap out from the cross armbreaker, and once again, Ziggler disappointingly didn't cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase.Opinion: This one really didn't click for me. Not surprised to see Del Rio come away with the win, though. This was certainly unoffensive and no one messed anything up, but I wasn't feeling it.
The Undertaker defeated CM Punk
For the few minutes, Undertaker controlled the action but Punk turned things with a deep arm drag when 'Taker went for the Old School from the ropes. Some time later, Punk continued his psychological games by landing UnderTaker's classic move Many-a-times Punk earned nearfalls. 'Taker hit the chokeslam, but Punk kicked out. Things moved outside, where 'Taker was placed on the Spanish announcers' table. Punk went with the flying elbow from the top rope and landed it, but the table didn't break. Back inside the ring, Undertaker hit Punk with the Tombstone, but surprisingly once again he kicked out. After the referee was knocked out, CM Punk drilled UnderTaker with the urn and appeared set to end the streak (with the classic hands-folded-on-the-heart pin), but once again, he kicked out after two-and-a-half counts. Finally, Undertaker reversed a GTS right into another Tombstone and got the clean pin. 21-0. There are not enough words that can this match justice. It was easily Match of the Year worthy. While Undertaker technically left as the winner, each wrestler deserves endless amounts of credit in what was a truly incredible 22 minutes of greatness.Opinion: By far and away the best match of the show. Even though I knew Undertaker was going to win (how couldn't he?), but at near the end they still had me buying into some of the false finishes, especially when Punk laid out Undertaker with the urn. But, of course, Undertaker had it in him to hit the Tombstone and remain undefeated. Great.
Triple H defeated Brock Lesnar
Basically, it is impossible to follow like what Undertaker and Punk did, but Triple H and Lesnar did a very good job. For a majority of the match, Lesnar beated Helmsley, send him through the Spanish announcers' table, hit him with a slew of chair shots, punished him with the steel steps and put him in the Kimura Lock. Shawn Michaels was drilled by Lesnar with the F5 when the Heartbreak Kid was trying to interfere. But Triple H worked his way back into it. After Michaels delivered Sweet Chin Music to Paul Heyman, Helmsley got Lesnar into a Kimura Lock of his own. Lesnar countered with several slams onto the steel stairs, but The Game continued to lock in the hold. Eventually, he set up Lesnar and dropped him with the Pedigree onto the steel for the pin. It was 24 minutes of two men putting their bodies on the line and incredibly entertaining to watch. Opinion: Sigh. Lesnar is now 1-2 since returning to WWE. That's right, the biggest monster in the company is 1-2. But Triple H had to get his win back here. There was nothing wrong with this, but it just seemed pointless to me to have Triple H win. Now they have to do something to rebuild Lesnar again. Great.John Cena defeated The Rock to win the WWE Championship
After so many finishers, reversals from finishers and nearfalls, JohnCena is the new World Champion. The Brahma Bull hit Cena with several Rock Bottoms and a People's Elbow, but the new champion was able to kick out every time, and both wrestlers exchanged blows for quite some time, Cena eventually grabbed the win after landing the AA. Afterwards, the two men hugged and had a handshake. Rock was given several moments in front of the crowd by John Cena, they stood at the top of the ramp together, also hands held high. No heel turn; just a new champion and two friends, apparently.Opinion: This was definitely slow-paced to start, but the two picked it up and Cena winning with the Attitude Adjustment didn't upset me as much as I thought it would when this match was first announced. I guess because I got myself ready for it. I don't know. But Cena is the champ again.
