Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it will launch its new Galaxy S IV smartphone on March 14 in an event at New York.
A Samsung representative confirmed the date and location for the event, but declined to offer further details. The confirmation comes just as the world's biggest cell phone show–Mobile World Congress–kicks off in Barcelona. Samsung used the show to launch Samsung Galaxy 8.0 Note tablet but, like HTC, opted not to make its big news at the show. Time to get excited for the next big thing. The Unpacked event is said to take place in New York City, unlike the Galaxy S III launch event which happened in London, and will be the first US launch event for Samsung in three years. Samsung says they were "bombarded with requests from U.S. mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country", hence the change of venue this year. Samsung Electronics' mobile division chief JK Shin quoted"We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year, and this time we changed the venue to New York, as we were bombarded with requests from US mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy SIV in the country".The Galaxy S IV model will heat up competition in the crucial U.S. mobile phone market, where Apple surpassed Samsung Electronics as the top mobile phone seller for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2012. Apple investors have grown anxious about the company's prospects amid intense competition from Samsung's cheaper, Android-powered phones, and signs the premium smartphone market may be close to saturation in developed markets. Apple shares have slumped 15 percent this year and the company is reportedly slashing orders for screens and other components from its Asian supplier as intensifying competition erodes demand for its latest iPhone. It will be the first U.S. launch of Samsung's flagship Galaxy smartphone in three years, company spokeswoman Chenny Kim said, and comes amid a Samsung advertising blitz in the United States that has including light-hearted jabs at Apple's fans. The upcoming Galaxy S IV will also go head to head with Apple's iPhone 5 and their upcoming iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. As for the phone itself, we are still dealing with rumors that suggest the following specs.
Samsung Galaxy S IV Specifications
- a 4.99-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD display,
- 2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor or a custom made 8-core Exynos processor,
- 2 GB RAM,
- Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the TouchWiz 5 user interface and
- a 13 megapixel camera with a new panorama mode called Samsung Orb.
We'll see how much of this comes to be true in a couple of weeks from now. The Samsung Galaxy S IV will be the beast. HTC took a moment before MWC to steal the limelight for their new HTC One smartphone, and it should be available in the first few weeks of March.
