His achievement of reaching 7000 runs in 149 innings is the third quickest by an Australian batsman in Tests - the quickest being 142 by Matthew Hayden and 145 by Ricky Ponting. • Clarke enjoys a marvellous record as captain, averaging 72.57. He has managed 2395 in 22 Tests, including nine hundreds. His overall tally of 23 centuries is exceeded only by Ricky Ponting (41), Steve Waugh (32), Matthew Hayden (30), Don Bradman (29), Allan Border (27) and Greg Chappell (24) for Australia in Tests. • Clarke has registered three centuries in his last four Tests against India - an unbeaten 329 at Sydney; 18 at Perth, 210 & 37 at Adelaide and an unbeaten 103 at Chennai - his tally being 697 in five innings at an average of 232.33. Thanks to his outstanding sequence, he is averaging 53.32 -- his highest average since December 2004. • Clarke has recorded six hundreds against India - a tally bettered only by Ricky Ponting (8) for Australia. • Ashwin was the lonely bowler to tight the grip over australians on the first day. Ashwin gained spin, dip and bounce while harvesting six wickets, but the rest tended to pitch too short and gave the Australians room to manoeuvre the ball around the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Ishant Sharma and the debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar appeared peripheral members of the attack; the omitted Pragyan Ojha can feel justly aggrieved. • Ravichandran Ashwin (6/88) has recorded his first-five wicket haul against Australia in Tests. Six wickets out of six were taken by him on the first day of a Test match for the first time. • Here is a brief Scorecard from Day 1:- Australia 316/7 95 overs Michale Clarke* 103 Moises Henriques 68 David Warner 59 Ravichandran Ashwin 30-5-88-6 Ravindra Jadeja 24-5-56-1Read more...
