Make Backlinks with Unconventional Techniques
- Start a petition on a subject you are enthusiastic about – Petitions are forwarded and shared which results in links back to your site (supposing your petition is hosted there).
- Claim your listing in 1-800 directories – If your company has an 800 number, claiming your listing on 1-800 directory websites will provide a few extra backlinks.
- Post a job listing for your company – While looking to hire a new worker, make sure your URL is contained in your job listing, as these posts are often syndicated across multiple sites.
- Give away a scholarship – Creating a scholarship is a great way to get your company's name out there and to get new backlinks flowing in.
- Post ads on Craigslist (when relevant) – Don't spam, but if you have something to sell or give away, include your backlink on your post.
- Update wikis in your industry – Contributing to the wiki pages in your industry is a good way to increase authority amongst your peers and secure high value backlinks to your site.
- Join the Better Business Bureau – For a fee, you can join this organization, increasing consumer trust and providing an opportunity to link back to your website.
- Participate in your community's Chamber of Commerce – Joining your local Chamber of Commerce should get you a directory listing on the organization's website.
- Contact your local library – Many libraries maintain resource lists, and getting your website mentioned on one of these collections can help you to secure a high PageRank link.
- Top Dog List – Create a list of 20+ people in your niche that your readers should follow. For each person, include a summary explaining why this person is awesome and the reason that your readers should check out their website. You can include a link to that person's best blog post or article.
- Contact each person on the list and let them know what you've done. Some of them may link back to you or Tweet a link to your blog post.
- Take note of newspapers and magazines that are willing to feature experts in many fields and try to write about your niche while linking back to your blog.

- Write a list of the "top 10 myths" or "top 10 mistakes" about something.
- Write on about.com and link to your blog in it, this will likely be crawled and used by a lot of websites thereby increasing backlinks to your blog.
- Run regular "live blogs" – Live blogs provide extra value to readers, which typically results in more interest and more backlinks.
- Launch FAQ posts – For the same reason that "how to" posts are effective forms of linkbait, you'll find that FAQ posts can help you build links by providing your audience with vital information.

- Submit your site to Dmoz, many other directories use this directory and that alone is enough quality backlinks for you.
- Submit your blog to .edu and .gov forums and blogs, Google so much loves backlinks from these sites and regards them as authority.
- Submit your blog to technorati.com and build more links to increase your ranks, this alone can help you get many high quality backlinks.
- Write posts that have "the ultimate" in the title.
- Make effective use of April fool.
- Do very costly jokes on your blog but indicate it is a joke underneath the post (tricky? ahah!), e.g., "Apple has bought Google for $260Billion", something like this will get tons of links and retweets before people even know that it is a joke.
- Get a collection of high quality paid things and make them available for free (make sure you are not violating the copyright of the owner in any way!).
- Beta test a lot of products and give your review and tips on improving the product, the owner might just link to you.
- Position yourself as an authority in your niche and try to get attention from the media.
- Offer to speak at events and seminars related to your niche, don't forget to mention your blog while introducing yourself, this will most likely help you get some backlinks.
- Render your services to top people in your niche, for example, the fellow who designed Darren Rowse's theme was credited at the footer.
- Have a "link to us" or "spread the word" page on your blog while asking your readers to link to you – it is important to make it easy for them by putting your direct html code there using your desired anchor text.
